The Story Behind the Fundraiser

In 2007, longtime SIA NCRSF member David Sawczuk’s son Benjamin – who was eight years old at the time – was struck by a car while riding his bicycle alongside a road. He suffered a traumatic brain injury and was in a coma for 23 days before undergoing months of extensive rehab therapy with the Kennedy Krieger Institute’s pediatric brain injury program and making a healthy recovery. After completing inpatient rehabilitation at Kennedy Krieger, Ben attended the institute’s Specialized Transition Program, a neurorehabilitation day hospital, for seven months. Ben went on to graduate from high school, then college—exceeding all expectations and prognoses. To date, the SIA NCRSF charity golf tournament has raised over $450,000 in donations toward the center’s brain injury research, patient transition efforts from hospital to home and urgently needed wheelchairs.
